The drawing stage of a spinning machine, and especially a ring spinner, has three powered drawing cylinders (12,14,16) with a drive motor (22) at least at one end of a drawing cylinder (16) together with its gearing (28). The drawing cylinder (16) can slide as one unit (30) in relation to another drawing cylinder (12), across the cylinder axis (II-II). Pref. the drawing cylinder unit (30) can slide in relation to at least one other cylinder (12), parallel to the drafting direction (II-II). The sliding movement is automatic, such as by a spindle-operated slide, to set the gap accurately between the cylinders. All the drawing cylinders (12,14,16) have separate motors (18,20,22) with gearings (24,26,28), which can be at both ends of the cylinders (12,14,16). Two cylinders (14,16) can be moved together in relation to the third cylinder (16), with their associated gearings, parallel to the drafting direction. Two sliding drawing cylinders (14,16) can be moved independently of each other, with their gearings as a unit (30). The three cylinders are on parallel axes and are coplanar, so that the two sliding cylinders (14,16) can slide in parallel on a plane within the three cylinders in the drafting direction (II-II).
