Polystyrene resin having hydroxy group(s), useful for organic reaction such as peptide synthesis, was prepared by reacting ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with benzene ring of polystyrene with controlling the quantities of oxide. Thus, polystyrene resin which was crosslinked divinylbenzene was swelled in solvent such as dichloromethane, carbon tetrachloride, dichloroethane, carbon disulfide, and nitromethane and addition-reacted with ethylene oxide or propylene oxide in the presence of Lewis acid such as AlCl3, AlBr3, SnCl4, SnBr4, and BF3 to give hydroxy group(s)-containing polystyrene resin.
