The device has a mandril (3) which comprises a free end (11) on which is arranged an end wall mould. An air channel (18) extends through the mandril and issues at its end via an air-permeable device (20). The air-permeable device is fitted in the mouth of the channel and its surface is aligned with that of the mandril end. The device is made of a porous material, of sintered material or can be of bronze. It has a pore size in its sintered form of at most 0.05 mm. A cooling station (6) provides the requisite cooling time for the straight-shaped end wall of the package blank, the cooling cycle being accelerated as much as possible with the aid of positive ventilation.
