PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-density/high-concentration granular detergent excellent in fluidity, whiteness and ready solubility by directly neutralizing an unneutralized alkylbenzenesulfonic acid. SOLUTION: This detergent is obtained by the following two consecutive processes: a mixture of >=4mol, per mol, of a unneutralized alkylbenzenesulfonic acid, of anhydrous sodium carbonate 30-500μm in granular size and >=0.1mol of granular or flaky anhydrous sodium hydroxide or anhydrous potassium hydroxide is blended with a virtually anhydrous unneutralized alkylbenzenesulfonic acid under agitation in a low-circumferential speed agitator such as a ribbon mixer followed by gently mixing so as not to exceed 90 deg.C in the temperature of the mixture to effect neutralization of part of the alkylbenzenesulfonic acrid; and 2nd process: the resultant partially neutralized product is incorporated with other detergent ingredients followed by kneading the mixture in a high- power shear kneader such as a screw extruder to effect complete neutralization of the alkylbenzenesulfonic acid.
