PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain hydroquinones industrially advantageously, used for a developer of the photography, an antioxidant, etc., by oxidizing phenols in the presence of cells (a treated material) of microorganisms belonging to Aspergillus genus capable of oxidizing the phenols to produce hydroquinones. SOLUTION: The objective hydroquinones used for a developer of the photography, an antioxidant, a synthetic intermediate, etc., is obtained at a high yield and a high selectivity by dispersing the cells or the treated material of microorganisms belonging to Aspergillus genus having an ability of oxidizing phenols to produce hydroquinones [e.g.; Aspergillus fumigatus MTF11-3 (FERM P-15114)] into a phosphate buffer (pH7.0) heated to 35 deg.C in advance and containing HCO3 <-> , then adding phenols (e.g.; phenol), performing the oxidation reaction while agitating for 24hr, removing the microorganisms, etc., by centrifugation, etc., extracting the reaction supernatant with an organic solvent such as methyl isobutyl ketone and evaporating to dryness. |
