The automatic monitoring and control system, for a machine forming a braided mantle round a cable core, has at least one optical monitor to give signals of the optical measurements to be processed to give command signals to control at least one parameter of the machine operation. The monitor is enclosed within an optical housing. The braiding filament is illuminated and a sensor registers the ambient light and a sensor receives the reflected light from the filament, to generate an appropriate signal. The signal processor is enclosed in a housing with an electronic circuit board. It has a command signal receiver and an optical signal receiver. A microprocessor takes the command and optical signals for programming to give output signals. The machine has at least one non-automatic means of working through the commands, and an automatic operation through the programmed signals from the microprocessor.
