The feeder has a lifting separation element which grasps the rear of the top sheet in a pile, relative to the direction (2) of conveying. The raised sheet can then be held from above by suction nipples, and can be fed in an extended alignment parallel to the top (5) of the pile, while a pressure foot (3) can be placed on the rear region of the pile. The separation element is the pressure foot, and can be driven roughly vertically between a position in which it rests on the top of the pile, and a raised position. It has a nozzle (4) whose alignment is roughly parallel to the top of the pile in the direction of conveying, and which is acted upon by compressed air during the raising motion. The nozzle has a surface which extends in the conveying direction above its air outlet openings (6), in order to create a suction effect.
