The mechanism operates a folding roof on a vehicle, and has longitudinal guide rails which are arranged on both sides of a roof opening, and in which slide elements (28) can move. Transverse sliding slats (7) are fixed to the latter, and a transverse folding slat (8) is pressed upwards by the free ends of supporting springs (25) on the slide elements. Each slide element has a receptacle for a simple insertion connection of a supporting spring. It also has a bearing hole (27) for a supporting component (26) on the folding slat, on whose underside the free end of the supporting spring engages.
