An actuator for releasing the locking catch (1) of a folding backrest (2) of a motor vehicle seat fitted with an inclination adjuster has a traction cable (3) usually secured to the upper actuating lever (4) which is deflected forwards over a lower deflection point and engages with the locking catch (1) which acts together with a locking bolt (10). Between the lower deflection point (6) and the locking catch (1) there is an additional deflector (9) under the tension cable (3) which moves the lower region of the tension cable upwards against its tensioned state and, with the backrest (2) in use, always keeps the angle of contact of the usual lower deflection point (6) constant in all inclined positions. This provides a considerably greater range of movement for the actuating lever.
