A tubular knitted fabric for a knitted article such as the calf, instep and sole portions of a hose comprises inner and outer tubes of separate yarns which are united at spaced single or groups of wales W to form a cellular structure by intermeshing loops K, K1 (Fig. 4) of the two tubes. The inner tube is preferably of a soft yarn such as wool while the outer tube is of a hard wearing yarn such as nylon. The yarns may be of the same or different colours and in the latter case a striped effect can be obtained. If the loops K of the inner tube are taken into the outer tube as Fig. 4 a mock rib effect is obtained on the outside but if the loops of the outer are taken into the inner tube a true rib effect is obtained (Fig. 8, not shown). A hose in accordance with the invention can be knitted on a superimposed cylinder machine when often a 1 x 1 rib top is produced by feeding nylon stretch or bulk yarn to the two sets of needles at front and back feeding stations, with the incorporation of an elastic yarn if desired, the top stitch bolt cam is withdrawn so that the top set of needles miss the nylon yarn but pick up a wool yarn which is introduced. A bottom stitch bolt cam is also withdrawn so that the bottom set of needles miss the wool yarn. Inner and outer tubes of wool and nylon are thereby knitted, the interconnections at the spaced wales being obtained by jacks of a patterning system acting on spaced needles of the bottom set to knit the wool yarn as well. High splicing at the heel may be carried out by the introduction of a splicing yarn with the wool yarn but the heel itself is produced in the usual reciprocatory manner. Reversion to circular knitting for the sole and instep is effected with an additional splicing yarn for the foot if desired. Finally for the toe the machine again reciprocates in the usual manner. The wool yarn may be replaced by ootton and the nylon by terylene (Registered Trade Mark). |
