PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve measuring accuracy while measuring tool dimensions after tool change by idle-operating a main spindle at a prescribed rotational speed or for prescribed time before starting the dimensional measurement of a processing tool fitted on the main spindle after tool change. SOLUTION: A bearing 15 itself (especially, angular ball bearings 15a, 15b functioning in the axial direction) is (elastically-)deformed (strain generated) in micron order internally by great force (for example, 3 tons or more) working upon at the time of tool unclamping, so that the main spindle 19 moves at front tip and microscopically (for example, 10μm). Therefore, at the time of tool unclamping after tool change, the deformed amount remains internally because of friction or the like. After tool change, the main spindle is idle- operated for elimination of the internal residue and automatic tool length measuring work.
