PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect accurately the existence of ink in an ink cartridge in a detection area. SOLUTION: When the recording is started, a carriage 15 is moved to the left from a home position S4 and when the carriage 15 reaches an ink jet start position S6 corrected in advance depending on ink type and shape of the cartridge, the recording head 5 starts jet of ink. Furthermore, when the carriage 15 keeps jetting ink for a prescribed period and enters an ink residual amount sensing area S2 while moving to the left at a prescribed speed, a photo sensor senses the ink jet state to sense the presence of ink in the ink cartridge. |
