A road safety device to absorb shock between road vehicles and implanted fixed road side objects uses stacks of used tyres made into a belt or ring of tyres stacked flat or on end in which the tyres are joined in two ways. The tyres in each stack are joined two-by-two and then the whole stack is joined together, both using tough plastic sheaths (10, 12). Preferably, the straps joining the stacks are used in three's at 120 degrees separation. To protect single items, e.g. trees of small diameter the tyres are cut, once or twice and placed around it. For larger obstacles a ring or belt of stacks are formed around it normally 1.4m minimum height. Walls of tyre stacks are formed between successive obstacles held by plastic coated steel ropes or ''nylon'' (RTM) cords.
