PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce Barkhausen noise. SOLUTION: A longitudinal bias layer 8 ofα-Fe2 O3 (iron oxide) is allowed to adhere to the bottom of a magnetoresistance layer 4. The bias layer 8 not only applies an exchange anisotropic magnetic field to the magnetoresistance layer 4 but also imparts such high coercive force as about several hundred Oe to the magneto-resistance layer 4 in a region B. Since the magnetization of the magnetoresistance layer 4 in the region B in a direction (x) is stabilized and a sure longitudinal bias magnetic field is applied to the magnetoresistance layer 4 in a region A, Barkhausen noise can be reduced and magnetic detectability can be improved.
