PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nonlinear optical material having a small ratio of slow response by constituting the matrix of a specified material and specifying the size of fine particles. SOLUTION: This nonlinear optical material 4 is produced by dispersing fine particles in an optically transparent matrix. The matrix consists of a material having <=1Ω.cm electric resistivity. The particle size of the fine particles is specified to 1 to 500nm. The optically transparent matrix means that when fine particles to be dispersed in the matrix are made of metal (including alloys but excluding semiconductors), the light absorption coefft. (α1 ) of the matrix in the absorption wavelength region of the surface plasmon of the fine particles is almost <=10cm<-1> . In this case, a material having resistivity <=1Ω.cm is specified for the matrix, because the proportion of slow response is drastically decreased and the nonlinear response becomes fast when the resistivity of the matrix is <=1Ω.cm.
