The lambda sensor is fitted in a high temperature region of the exhaust gas circuit close to the engine and is provided with a cooling fin (5) or a similar device. The sensor and/or its carrier (3) can be cooled by external means, e.g. fan cooled, liquid cooled perhaps using the engine coolant.
