In a method of producing composite metallic material a layer of matrix material 31 and a reinforcing layer are rolled up together and subjected to heat and pressure to form a billet. The reinforcing layer may cover the whole of the matrix layer (Fig. 1, not shown) or only a part thereof. Tubular members 37 may be included to provide coolant passages when turbine blades are manufactured from the billet. The matrix material may be aluminium or a ductile alloy thereof and the reinforcing layer may comprise stainles steel wires 36 and tubes 37 woven into a mesh with pure aluminium wires. Foils or layers of different alloys can be incorporated in the final billet with or without further reinforcement. |
