The blank is initially cut from a flat metal sheet (1) with a multi-layer structure comprising outer metal layers (2,3) sandwiching a central layer of synthetic material (4). The blank is then delaminated at one edge, along the plane of the central layer, to a depth corresponding to the width of a pair of flanges (10,11) to be formed. The delaminated portions of the blank are then bent perpendicularly to its plane to define the flanges on at least one edge of a central core portion (9). A lateral plate (12) may then be welded onto at least one pair of adjacent flanges, to define a beam of I-shaped or T-shaped cross-section.
