The method uses the magnetic sensor to monitor, at a measuring point, three components of the disturbances in the magnetic field strength vectors, which object activating the movable magnetic field causes. From the monitored components the calculating component determines the normal to a magnetic plane for the curve which the magnetic vectors generate and also the distance between the movable magnetic field-activating object and the reference point bases on the determined normal to the magnetic plane. Distance information covering the distance between the measurement point and the reference point is stored in the memory. An inclination sensor determines the inclination of the magnetic sensor by observation of the local undisturbed earth magnetic field.
