Slag-tapping hole in hearth of coal gasification furnace

The coal gasification furnace (7) has a gasification chamber (22) into which coal and an oxidising medium are injected circumferentially through wall-mounted burners (5,6), and in which a combustible gas is generated from the coal. A slag collection hearth (25) separates the gasification chamber from a slag quenching chamber (21) below it, and the slag reaches the quenching chamber (21) through a tapping hole (17) in the hearth. The hole (17) has a non-circular cross section, the cross section being larger in the central part (17") than at a peripheral part (17'). At least two diametrically opposite sections (17") of the hole are in the form of slits.
