Knitted elastic garments, e.g. hosiery and ladies full-fashioned panties, seamless girdles, brassieres or bathing suits, shaped to generally conform to the configuration of that portion of the body on which the garment is to be worn and having the overally appearance of a conventional non-elastic garment and sufficient stretchability and recoverability to properly fit several body sizes heretofore requiring garments of different sizes, are produced by knitting a fabric entirely from cellulosic fibres, e.g. cotton, or with a proportion of at least 51% by weight of cellulosic fibres normally used in non-elastic garments, so that the courses of the fabric have oversize stitch loops and forming an oversize blank, forming the blank into the desired elastic garment by seaming the blank and shrinking the fabric to the extent of 25-60%, e.g. by treatment with an aqueous caustic soda solution, to reduce the stitch loops and garments to normal size. The fabric may be knitted so that the stitch loops are 25-60% larger than normal size stitch loops and the shrinking may be effected with an aqueous solution containing 16% by weight of caustic soda at room temperature with the fabric not under any tension. The garments may be stretchable with the range of 25-45%.ALSO:A stretchable knitted elastic garment fabric having an overall appearance of a conventional non-elastic knitted fabric and having sufficient stretchability and recoverability that a garment made therefrom will properly fit several body sizes heretofore requiring garments of different sizes are produced by knitting a fabric entirely from cellulosic fibres, e.g. cotton, or with a proportion of at least 51% by weight of cellulosic fibres normally used in non-elastic fabric, so that the courses of the fabric have oversize stitch loops and then shrinking the fabric to the extent of 25-60%, e.g. by treatment with an aqueous caustic soda solution, to reduce the stitch loops to normal size. The fabric may be knitted so that the stitch loops are 25-60% larger than normal size stitch loops and the shrinking may be effected with an aqueous solution containing 16% by weight of caustic soda at room temperature with the fabric not under any tension either before or after making it up into the garment, e.g. hosiery and ladies' full-fashioned panties, seamless girdles, brasieres or bathing suits. The fabric may be stretchable within the range of 25-45%.
