In the cylinder head 11 exhaust gas is supplied to a passage 37 for recirculation to inlet passage 28 and air is supplied to a passage 36 for conveying to exhaust passage 29. A valve (48, Fig.2) controlled by an actuator (46) in response to the operating condition of the engine allows communication between the passages 36 and 37.
