PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convert a ceramic material requiring a high-temp. process for production into a composite and to obtain a fiber reinforced ceramic composite excellent in fracture toughness by using specified boron nitride fibers having high tensile strength and a high degree of orientation as a filler for a composite. SOLUTION: This fiber reinforced ceramic composite contains boron nitride fibers made of boron nitride having a structure obtd. by stacking faces (C-faces) each formed by combining 6-membered rings each consisting of alternately bonded boron and nitrogen atoms in the surface direction of the rings in the matrix made of ceramics, glass or an inorg. single crystal. The boron nitride fibers have at least 1,400MPa tensile strength. At least a part of the C-faces of the boron nitride have been oriented practically parallel to the fiber axes of the boron nitride fibers and the degree of orientation of the C-faces is at least 0.74. |
