A detergent composition comprising a linear alkylbenzene sulphonate and a sulphate of an ethoxylated long chain alcohol of 10-15 carbon atoms, the alkyl phenyl portion of the said alkylbenzene sulphonate having a molecular weight of 230-240 and its alkyl being at least 80 mole per cent C10, C11 and C12, at least a half of the alkyls in the C10-C12 range being C10 and C11, the C10 and C11 being at least 45% of the total alkyl content, no more than 2% C14, no more than 2% C9 and no more than 15% C13, the alkyl of the alkylbenzene sulphonate containing at least 60 mole per cent of alkyls whose benzene attachment is on the 3 or higher carbon of the alkyl radical. The composition may also contain a monoalkanolamide and/or an alkyl amine oxide, the fatty acid portion of the amide or the alkyl portion of the amine oxide having 11-13 carbon atoms, a hydrotrope, a foam stabilizing additive and a perfume or dye.
