Method of machining surfaces with hydraulically mounted roller

The method involves using balls or rollers (4) supported in hydraulic bearings (16). The bearings are maintained at a constant offset to the theoretical workpiece surface(17). The position of the ball or roller w.r.t. the bearing is altered during the machining of the workpiece (3) by the shape characteristics of the workpiece surface. A device (1) compares the positions of actual workpiece surface (2) and the theoretical workpiece surface (17) so that when they coincide the tool acts at that point (20) on the workpiece with a predetermined force (F). This force is decreased or increased during machining depending on the recesses (19) or projections (18) of the surface from the finished theoretical profile.
