Appts. for the direct reduction of iron oxide particles comprises: (a) a device (10) to produce a reduction gas by reforming natural gas; (b) a source (18) of iron oxide fine particles (19); (c) a device (26,28) to supply iron oxide fine particles to a preheater (14); (d) a preheater (14) of bubble tray circulation type; (e) a 1st cyclone (30) connected to the preheater (14); (f) a 1st device to supply reduction gas to the preheater (14); (g) 1st reactor (16) of bubble tray circulation type connected to preheater (14); (h) a 2nd cyclone (34) connected to 1st reactor (16); (i) a 3rd cyclone (60) connected to 2nd cyclone (34); (j) a wet purification device (48) connected to 3rd cyclone (60); (k) a 2nd device to supply reduction gas to a 1st reactor (16); (l) 2nd reactor (12) connected to 1st reactor (16); (m) a 3rd device to supply reduction gas to a 2nd reactor (12); and (n) device, connected to the 2nd reactor (12) to collect metallised iron particles. Process for reducing iron oxide from a source (18) of fine particles is also claimed.
