A hinged door or window, or pivoting window, has a pair of sensors on the fixed frame opposite the hinged edge and a rod in the corresponding edge of the moveable part which slides from one position, when the door or window is closed, to another when open. Fixed position sensors monitor the position of the rod to indicate the status of the door or window. The window or door (1) has a hinged frame (3) and fixed frame (4) and one or more closed positions (2) comprising locking slots (5), locking bolt (6) and an operating slider (7). The slider moves the locking bolt from one position (10) when the door or window is closed to a second position (11) when fully open. A pair of sensors (8.1,8.2) detect which position prevails.
