The invention relates to a method for removing hydrogen sulfide compounds from liquid sulfur by treating the liquid sulfur with a gas, wherein the liquid sulfur undergoes at least two separate treatments with a finely divided gas, and in each treatment use is made of a recirculation system with gas lift, while the possibility that a part of the liquid sulfur does not undergo any treatment is prevented practically completely.
