PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain rose oxide having an odor quality rich in trans isomer by cyclizing an optically active S- or R-dimehyloctadienediol in the presence of an S- or R-isomer zero-valence Pd-optically active phosphine complex as a catalyst. SOLUTION: An S or R-isomer of an optically active 3,7- dimethyl-5,7-octadien-1-ol of formula I or 3,7-dimethyl-5,6-octadien-1-ol of formula II is cyclized in the presence of a 0 (zero)-valent Pd-optically active phosphine complex to give a rose oxide with a trans-isomer ratio of >=40% in a >=70% yield. |
