PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new polyarylene sulfide, causing a remarkably small amount of tlashes in molding and providing a molding, having an ultrahigh whiteness degree and excellent in mechanical properties by setting a value of the pH of a polymer slurry in a post treating step within a specific range. SOLUTION: The amount of terminal SX groups (X is an alkali metal or H) based on the sum total of the terminal SX groups and SZn groups is <20mol% and the melt viscosity V6 is 100-2000P. Furthermore, (A) an alkali metallic sulfide (e.g. sodium sulfide) is reacted with (B) a dihalo-aromatic compound (e.g. p dichlorobenzene) in an organic amide-based solvent to provide the polyarylene sulfide. In the process, the pH of a polymer slurry (measured after diluting the slurry with water in a weight of 6.5 times based on the slurry) is regulated to 10.5-12.5 in a polymerization system or a post-treating step and (C) a zinc compound (e.g. zinc chloride) in an amount of 0.001-0.1mol based on 1mol component (A) is added thereto at an optional time during the period from the time of 90% conversion rate of the component (B) to the post-treating step to carry out the reaction. |
