The protection system has a programmable, microprocessor-controlled control and monitoring device (1), an electrically-operated locking bolt (8), for the access door or cover of a protected object and a transmission coil (4) with a sensor (5), monitoring the position of the access door or cover. The protection system is operated via a key (17) incorporating a microchip transponder, inductively coupled to the control and monitoring device via the transmission coil, which is opened and closed for permitting read-out of the key identification via a programming element (18).
