The invention concerns novel mesogenic metallic complexes which can be polymerized photochemically in their liquid crystalline state and correspond to formula (I), in which at least one of the two R groups is a group which can be polymerized photochemically and M is a metal, in particular zinc. The invention also concerns a process for photochemically polymerizing these complexes, and the resultant columnar anisotropic liquid-crystalline polymers containing one metallic centre per monomer unit.
