The spigot (4) is inserted in the socket (2), with an annular seal packing (6) compressed between the socket inner surface and the spigot inner surface; an annular housing (11) is externally fitted from a position more spaced from the socket (2) than a convex portion (8) on the spigot (4) and over a portion of the socket (2) beyond a flange (7) with a ring (21) engaging behind the flange. A split lock ring (24) or ring segments fitted between the housing (11) and the convex portion (8) engage with surfaces (18,20) of both to prevent separation. Since the housing inner diameter is greater than the outer diameter of the convex portion (8) the housing (11) is externally fitted on the spigot (4) after attachment of the convex portion, e.g. by welding, with the lock ring added afterwards.
