The duration measurement device measures the transfer duration of a signal in a digital transfer unit (1) with higher (2) and lower (3) ranking terminals. A timing signal (15) is sent via the transfer unit from the higher to the lower terminal using a transmitter (12) and receiver (5). The received timing signal (7,7') is passed either directly to a transmitter (9) for sending back to the higher terminal, or via a synchronisation unit (8). A receiver (16) in the higher-order terminal receives the timing signal. A phase comparator (19) compares the phase of the timing signal emanating directly from the source (14) with that of the received timing signal (18), the output of which is used by a calculation part (20) which computes the signal transfer duration.
