PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound exhibiting a ferrodielectric property especially excellent in responsibility and memorability singly or when mixed with one or more of other liquid crystal compounds, and useful for electro-optical switching elements. SOLUTION: Preferably, an optically active compound of formula I (R1 -R3 are independently a linear or branched alkyl, a 3-18C linear or branched alkenyl, a 3-18 linear or branched alkinyl, etc.; A, B, C are independently 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, 2,5-pyrimidinylene, etc.; (l), (m), (n) are 0, 1 wherein (l)+(m)+(n) is not 0; X, X' are H, a halogen, cyano, a 1-5C alkyl, etc.; D is a divalent 1-4C alkyl; * exhibits an asymmetric carbon), e.g. a compound of formula 11. The compound of formula I is synthesized by reacting a corresponding optically active glycidyl ether with a malonic acid diester derivative in the presence of a base in an organic solvent. |
