PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a modified carbon material improved in an affihity for a matrix and water and mechanical strengths by reacting a sulfur trioxide gas diluted with an inert gas is reacted by contact with the surface of a carbon material. SOLUTION: An inert gas treated by passing concentrated sulfuric acid land a glass wool filter 2 is passed through a flowmeter 3 and is mixed with a sulfur trioxide 4 gasified at 50-100 deg.C with an evaporator 5 to obtain a diluted sulfur trioxide gas 5a of a sulfur trioxide concentration of 0.1-80vol.%. The gas 5a is introduced into a flask containing a carbon material 9 and placed in a thermostat 8 at a flow rate of 0.01-10,000ml/min and reacted by contact with the material 9 for 0.5min to 1hr at -80 to 300 deg.C. |
