PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the vector quantization method, image information compression method or the like for compressing image information, especially image information at a high compression rate by adopting the method capable of generating a general-purpose code book practically and to obtain the medium and equipment for recording, reproducing and communicating the compressed image information using the method. SOLUTION: Each image frame constituting moving image information is divided into a key frame and a motion compensation frame, a block of the key frame is divided and an image pattern of each block is subject to vector quantization by using a self-organization characteristic mapping algorithm. Furthermore, as to the motion compensation frame, the motion vector is decided to each block and the motion vector pattern of the block being a component of a large block is normalized by using the self-organization characteristic mapping algorithm to conduct vector quantization. On the other hand, a representative vector representing the obtained motion vector is decided and a general-purpose code book for vector quantization of the motion compensation frame is generated. |
