PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the output voltage characteristic of a rotary differential transformer linear within a specific range by making the gap permeance between a stator and rotor proportional to the angle of rotation of the rotor and providing the exciting windings and output windings of the stator 1 so that the windings can have specific number of poles. SOLUTION: A rotary differential transformer is provided with exciting windings 10 and output windings 11 installed to a stator 1 and a rotor 13 having such a shape that the gap permeance between the rotor 13 and stator 1 can become proportional to the angle of rotation of the rotor 13. In the transformer, the windings 10 and 11 are wound so that the windings 10 can have 4×n poles (where, n is an integer) and the windings 11 can have 2×n poles. Therefore, the output voltage characteristic of the transformer becomes linear within an angle range from -90 deg. to +90 deg..
