Hydrocarbons are reduced with gaseous hydrogen in the presence of nickel obtained by reduction of nickel chloride with triethylsilane. In examples the reductions of cis-cis-cyclo-octa-1:5-diene, toluene, hept-1-ene, cyclohexene, allylbenzene and limonene to, respectively, cyclooctane, methylcyclohexane, heptane, cyclohexane, propylbenzene and paramenthane are described. Comparative data describe such reductions using Raney nickel.ALSO:Organic compounds are reduced with gaseous hydrogen in the presence of nickel obtained by reduction of nickel chloride with trimethyl-silane. Reduction may take place at -C = C-, = C = O or -N = O linkages. Examples describe the reduction of benzyl alcohol to hexa-hydrobenzyl alcohol, methyl terephthalate to methyl hexahydrophthalate, 3 : 3 - dimethylbutan - 2 - one to 3 : 3 dimethyl - butan - 2 - ol and phenol to cyclohexanol.ALSO:In a process for the reduction of an organic compound with gaseous hydrogen there is used a nickel catalyst which has been prepared by reducing nickel chloride with thiethylsilane. Additionally the catalyst may contain a minor proportion of an alkaline compound e.g. NaOt/solution. |
