A method is described for the utilisation of cotton seed whereby the cotton seed is subjected to a range of processing collating all its constituents in a pure state and high quality cotton flour free of gossypol as a source of protein, cotton oil as a high quality refined oil and the husks as prime quality paper pulp. It involves cutting off the linter with special machinery which, after cleaning with detergent and lime, is used for absorbent and high colour products; this is followed by peeling of the cotton seed in a manner so as not to crush the oil and gossypol glands, the cotton flour is separated and extracted with mixed solvents containing water with an azeotropic mixture of hexane-acetone-water 44:53:3 or hexane-isopropanol-water 55:36:9 of low boiling point so as to collect the cotton oil with the gossypol as an extract from which the gossypol can be removed after binding to urea or primary amines or anthranillic acid or after alkaline washing and the cotton oil is then refined in the usual manner for a high quality product. |
