The present invention is directed toward a unique, ultra-fast, all-optical switching device or switch (10) made with readily available, relatively inexpensive, highly nonlinear photonic glasses. These photonic glasses have a sufficiently negative group velocity dispersion and high nonlinear index of refraction to support stable light bullets (20, 21). The light bullets (20, 21) counterpropagate through, and interact within the waveguide (12) to selectively change each others' directions of propagation into predetermined channels (14, 15, 16, 17, 15A, 16A). In one embodiment, the switch (30) utilizes a rectangularly planar slab waveguide (32), and further includes two central channels (36, 41) and a plurality of lateral channels (34, 35, 37, 38, 39, 40, 42, 43) for guiding the light bullets (20, 21) into and out of the waveguide (32).
