A low noise, hermetic motor-driven compressor suitable for used in a refrigerator or an air-conditioner is disclosed in which a closed container (20) has a spherical wall portion (20a) on which a combined motor-and-compressor assembly (23) is supported via a suspension mechanism (24), and the suspension mechanism (24) includes two snubber stays (27) having spherical portions (27a) complementary in contour to the shape of the spherical wall portion (20a) of the closed container (20) and welded to the spherical wall portion (20a). The spherical wall portion (20a) increases the stiffness of the closed container (20), which stiffness is enhanced by the spherical portions (27a) of the snubber stays (27). The thus reinformed closed container (20) is unlikely to vibrate in resonance with the vibration of the combined motor-and-compressor assembly (23). Thus, the hermetic motor-driven compressor is able to operate silently.
