Methyl-substituted aromatics of the formula (I) in which R<1>, R<2> and R<3> have the meaning given in the description, can be advantageously reacted under free radical conditions to give the respective trichloromethyl- or tribromomethyl-substituted aromatics if the reaction is carried out in the presence of one or more chlorides or bromides of the heavy alkali metals.
