A method for synchronizing a telecommunications connection in a mobile communications system so that it is checked from a database whether an energy economy mode start frame (720) and the length of the energy economy cycle have been determined for a direct mode channel, and if this is not the case, the corresponding information is determined and stored in the database so that each of the pre-emption frames (710, 711, 712) coincides with a sleeping frame (701, 702, 703) of the energy economy mode. Simultaneously, the information on the desired control channel of the base station and the timing information related to it, and a command to switch to the energy economy mode are transmitted to the first mobile station, the command containing the corresponding information. In response to the information, the first mobile station switches to a dual watch mode on the one hand and to the energy economy mode on the other hand, to communicate either on the direct mode channel or the control channel so that the mobile station can listen to the control channel between the transmission time-slots of the direct mode channel while communicating on the direct mode channel.
