An apparatus and a method for muting a sound signal at a digital system are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a sound diminishing unit(11) for generating a mute data stream which is diminished from a first inputted sound to zero according to a signal of a mute key, and a data selector(12) for selectively providing a general sound data at a general state or providing the mute data stream from the sounding diminishing unit(11).
