PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium less liable to warp with a protective layer not causing scuffing even by repeated sliding of a magnetic head and excellent in durability. SOLUTION: This magneto-optical recording medium has a recording layer 4, a reflecting layer 6 and a protective layer 7 in this order on the substrate 2 and a magnetic head slides on the surface of this medium at the time of recording. The recording layer 4 is a metallic thin film and the protective layer 7 is based on Si or consists essentially of Si and at least one among O, N and C. The thickness of the protective layer 7 is 30-6,000nm, the layer 7 has compressive stress and the product of the stress of the layer 7 and the thickness of the layer 7 is <=3×10<5> dyn/cm.
