The instrument set consists of a base (10) which can be fixed provisionally to a resectioned patella. A trial implant (11), of the same shape as the prosthetic implant, has an adjuster (11b) and is capable of being mounted on the base and moved perpendicular to the prosthetic trochlea. Marks (18) on the base are used in conjunction with the trial implant and adjuster to determine the relative positions of the base and the trial implant while adjustments are being made by the surgeon. The base (10) is made with at least one slot (17) which is situated perpendicular to the prosthetic trochlea. The position of the slot corresponds to that of an anchoring element on the implant, while its length covers the anchoring element's end positions.
