The method comprises the steps of broadcasting system parameter values on the control channel of a base station, and receiving broadcast system parameters on the control channel at the mobile station (M1 to M10). The received parameter values are stored within the memory of the mobile station. The system parameter value indicative of the system within which the mobile station is currently registered is stored in the mobile station memory. A system access message is broadcast from the mobile to the base station. A system acknowledgement message, including system parameter values, is received at the mobile station. The values in the mobile are updated with the system values received in the acknowledgement.
