The IC engine has the fuel injection rate determined in relation to the required engine torque. The air inlet is determined by the open time of the inlet valve. This has an 'open' command at a timing determined by the engine conditions and a 'close' command determined by the output of the lambda sensor (6) in the exhaust system. The exact timing of the inlet valve (5) can include fine adjustment of both the open and close commands. If the control range is exceeded then a failsafe control operates by reducing the fuel injection rates.
