摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve light utilization efficiency and to provide a good picture quality device by resolving white illumination light into multiple color rays by making them pass through one-dimensional binary type diffraction gratings. SOLUTION: A white light flux collected by A0 passes through color resolving- multiplexing element S0 before it is resolved into three color rays in RGB bands, and the color rays are made incident on the optical modulation elements T0, T+1, T-1 and are reflected off a reflection plate 7. In this case, a color resolving/ multiplexing element group 6 is a rasin molding of one-dimensional binary type diffraction grating. The light fluxes in individual wavelength bands are optically modulated before they are made to exit from the optical modulation elements then made to exit from it. The light in the wavelength band G modulated by the optical modulation element T0 is multiplexed by an optical modulation element S0 with the light in the wavelength band R resolved by a color resolving/multiplexing element S+1 and demodulated by the optical modulation element T+1, and the light in the wavelength band B resolved by the color resolving/multiplexing element S-1 and demodulated by the optical modulation element T-1, and then the light is made to exit through a light collecting element A0.
